lyrics

The year I was born was 1991
I was my father's first biological son
but I had one older brother, he was 7 at the time
He didn't know his real dad but he was sure glad he had mine

My father met my mother maybe 3 years before
She fell madly in love but did not know what for
She was a single mother and previously married
My dad wanted her so badly
It was exciting and scary

And my mom would ask my father back then nearly every night
"John, when are you gonna make me your wife?"
He said "There's still one thing that I'd really like to see,
Can you make fried okra the way my momma used to make me?"

Well, he came home to the sound of cracklin' on the stove
and it brought tears to his eyes
He found more happiness inside that girl
than anything else beneath the sky

In 1993 my baby brother Cole was born in Kansas City hospital
And with a bag of Dallas dirt my dad said "can i cover the bed? I
I want my boy born on Texas Soil!" Thats actually what he said.

And when the doctor said "You're crazy"
my dad threw the bag away
looked at me and said
"son it looks like Missouri is gonna have to be Okay."

and then for four years we lived in Blue Springs
thats where I made some of my first memories
Like the first time I saw a rainbow
or that first dog I had named Sissy

And I remember the first time music ever meant anything to me
I was in my room humming the melody to we will rock you by Queen

and then the parents sat the boys down
in the year 1996
They said we're moving the family back Texas
We're moving back to Dallas, Texas

We built a house on a piece of land outside of town
Just like my father always wanted to
And we buried a bible where the living room would be
and we prayed "Lord, You gave us this house now we give it back to you."
We give it back to you
